AI Hippocratic Oath from "Diversity Reboot"
In our founder's newest book, "Diversity Reboot", a new cross-cultural paradigm for diversity, inclusion and belongingness includes the use of trustworthy AI to mass-personalize support.
But before using AI in the workplace. Dr. Barney recommends a change management campaign to set the context for how AI should and shouldn't be used to improve the odds of achieving shared goals. Part of that is his proposed "AI Hippocratic Oath" that appears below:
Leader's AI Hippocratic Oath
As a leader in an AI-powered workplace, I pledge to:
- Uphold Transparency: Clearly communicate how AI supports our goals, explain our data usage policies, and disclose our quality assurance and bias mitigation efforts to foster trust, understanding and competitive advantage.
- Protect Measurement Sovereignty: Respect employees' right to control their personal measures and coaching, ensuring access is granted only on a need-to-know basis, and safeguarding information with the same rigor as health information.
- Champion Ethical AI: Implement and advocate for AI systems that are unbiased, explainable, accurate, precise, supportive and job-related, regularly updating our practices to align with best standards.
- Ensure Consensual Monitoring: Obtain informed consent for monitoring job-related performance, potential, promotability and pitfalls, while allowing employees to control sharing of personal growth measurements. Submit to transparent monitoring of my own leadership behaviors, including both positive actions and potential counterproductive behaviors.
- Foster Physical and Psychological Safety: Create a physical and psychological environment where employees feel secure in taking risks, expressing concerns, and contributing ideas without fear of retribution.
- Adapt to Cultural Contexts: Adjust AI assessment, developmental challenge, and coaching based on preferences, capabilities and business needs.
- Empower: Provide AI-powered, just-in-time feedback tailored to support each unique employee’s job and career goals, offering targeted development opportunities based on personal and business needs.
- Celebrate Excellence: Use AI to recognize improvements and achievements to foster motivation and engagement.
- Enforce Leadership Standards: Hold myself and other leaders accountable to clear behavioral targets, modeling ethical leadership and organizational values.
- Combat Toxic Behaviors: Use AI diagnostically to identify and address harmful workplace actions, actively working to eliminate behaviors that threaten our workplace health.
- Respect Liberty: Recognize employees' right to control their personal and work-life data, allowing opt-in for additional data sharing with mentors or well-wishers at their discretion.
- Cultivate Reciprocal Trust: Commit to treating employees with the same respect and consideration I expect in return, fostering a culture of mutual trust between leaders and employees.
- Pursue Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about advancements in AI, ethics, and leadership practices, committing to ongoing learning and adaptation of our AI-driven processes.
By adhering to this oath, I commit to creating a workplace that harnesses AI's power to drive success while respecting individual rights, fostering trust, and promoting ethical leadership.
